ARE EARNINGS EXPECTATIONS LOW ENOUGH?
The earnings season is heating up quickly. Over the next two weeks nearly 60% of the S&P 500's market cap and 50% of European companies will report earnings, according to J.P. Morgan.
Significant profit forecast downgrades in the run up to the season mean the bar for companies is now quite low. However, the U.S. bank cautions that this might not be enough to trigger a positive share price reaction.
"The question is whether the expectations are low enough entering the season, especially given that markets are hovering near highs, and positioning is elevated," says JPM strategist Mislav Matejka in a note.
"Global composite PMI lost steam in Q3, after three quarters of acceleration. Given this backdrop, the reduction in the hurdle rate that took place over past weeks might not necessarily mean we get a positive reaction to results".
