Sterling slips after mixed US CPI, claims data
GBP/USD drifted lower after rising core U.S. inflation boosted bears, with the potential for lower Fed rate cut odds likely to put further downside pressure on the pound.
Thursday's data was particularly confounding given the recent shift by the Fed in priority from the inflation to employment side of its mandate, which was highlighted on Wednesday by San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly, who said she was not worried about a reacceleration of inflation driven by policy easing.
With core year-on-year CPI above 3% and rising, markets may see it as difficult for the Fed to write off inflation completely in favor of employment, while the jump in initial jobless claims recorded in the latest week's data may make for a difficult juggling act.
For now, GBP/USD is finding support ahead of the key 1.30 level, with risks skewed to the downside.
Should Friday's UK data hint at soft GDP and output, sterling bears may test that support, and if the daily cloud base at 1.2941 gives way the Aug. 7 low at 1.2666 may come quickly into focus.
