Raw sugar hovers around near two-year low, cocoa climbs
LONDON, Aug 21 (Reuters) -Raw sugar futures were hovering on Wednesday just above a near-two year low set earlier this week, while New York cocoa futures were sharply higher.
SUGAR
* October raw sugar SBc1 fell 0.1% to 17.55 cents per lb by 1051 GMT after slumping to a low of 17.52 cents on Tuesday, the weakest level since October 2022.
* Dealers said the strong pace of sugar production in Centre-South Brazil continued to keep the market on the defensive although there were signs that it is beginning to tail off more quickly than last year.
* "While the CS Brazil crop is running ahead of last year, the latest fortnightly report from UNICA shows that output in the second half of July was lower YoY. If this trend continues, speculators may have to rethink their bearish attitude towards the market," ING said in a note.
* October white sugar LSUc1 fell 0.1% to $502.20 a ton.
COCOA
* December New York cocoa CCc2 rose 3.1% to $7,876 a ton.
* Dealers said there were still major concerns about the situation in number two producer Ghana with the state regulator now targeting a crop of just 650,000 metric tons, down from an earlier prediction of 810,000 tons.
* They noted that Ghana may struggle to raise enough money to purchase its next crop following a decision not to raise a syndicated loan for the first time in more than three decades.
* December London cocoa LCCc2 rose 2.4% to 5,644 pounds ($7,360.90) a ton.
COFFEE
* November robusta coffee LRCc2 fell 0.7% to $4,585 a ton, slipping back from the prior session's one-month high of $4,656.
* December arabica coffee KCc2 fell 1.35% to $2.4515 per lb.
