USD/JPY recovery falters at first hurdle
July 15 (Reuters) -A rather tepid start to the week for USD/JPY with the pair anchored to the 158 handle. While there have been modest attempts at a recovery, price action has in large parts been skittish as traders continue to show concerns over the possibility of currency intervention.
Thus far, dip buyers have been left disappointed with USD/JPY failing at its first hurdle at 158.40, which marks the 23.6% fib of the drop fueled by CPI and suspected intervention. Alongside this, given the current divergence between rate spreads and USD/JPY, a larger rebound may be harder to come by in the short run.
For additional dollar downside against the yen, a fresh catalyst will likely be needed. This is where the upcoming U.S. retail sales report will be closely watched, as another set of soft figures would likely prompt a fresh leg lower in the greenback.
On the technical front, key support resides at the 55DMa (157.57) which has so far provided a floor for USD/JPY. However, a close below could open the door towards the 100DMA (154.93).
