Egypt's PM says fuel on order to end load-shedding power cuts this summer

DUBAI, July 4 (Reuters) -Egypt has contracted for all the fuel it will need to end load-shedding power cuts this summer, its Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Thursday.
The North African country is grappling with power shortages as a heatwave drives up demand for cooling. It needs to import around $1.18 billion worth of natural gas and mazut fuel oil to end the long-running cuts.
"We hope next week we announce a date to end the power cuts," Madbouly said at a press conference. "We want the crisis to end for good before the year-end," he added.
"We managed to get the fiscal resources needed, resources in dollars, around $1.2 billion needed, not a small number."
"The contracts will take place over July and August for the shipments to arrive, payments will also be made in July and August... Some of these shipments have arrived already," he said.
Egypt began accumulating arrears to companies and contractors during a long-running foreign currency shortage after the COVID-19 pandemic.
It has started paying off what it owes to foreign oil and gas companies operating in the country, the government said in March, after the shortage has eased following a record investment deal, a devaluation and an expansion of Egypt's current International Monetary Fund programme.
The country's new petroleum minister said on Wednesday that his ministry will work with foreign companies on arrears owed to them, Karim Badawi told local channel ExtraNews .
In June, Egypt fully awarded 20 cargoes of LNG in its biggest purchase of the seaborne fuel, aimed to cover heavy summer demand from July through September.
Some 21 liquefied natural gas cargos are to arrive in Egypt during the summer, in addition to shipments of mazut fuel, state news agency MENA quoted the petroleum ministry's spokesperson as saying on Monday.
The first gas shipment arrived on Monday, and is being discharged for supply into the national gas grid, the ministry spokesperson said.
