Chile ups pressure on Italian utility Enel over power cuts

SANTIAGO, Aug 9 (Reuters) -The Chilean government applied new pressure on Friday on Italian power distributor Enel ENEI.MI to expedite the process of restoring power to customers who have been without electricity since a severe storm caused prolonged service disruptions last week.
Energy Minister Diego Pardow told journalists the government was moving forward with a review of Enel's concession to serve 33 municipalities in the Metropolitan region of Santiago, which could result in the concession's cancellation.
The government has set a deadline for Enel to reconnect 14,000 customers within the next 48 hours, Pardow said. Enel has yet to issue any statements on the process.
Pardow said it had not been necessary to pursue a similar process of reviewing a concession of Chinese company State Grid's Chilean utility CGE due to the company's progress reconnecting customers.
In addition to these measures, the government will begin a process next week to provide compensation to customers whose power was disrupted.
