Corn and soybeans steady after 4-year lows, wheat drifts down
Updates at 1232 GMT, changes dateline
PARIS/CANBERRA, Aug 19 (Reuters) -Chicago soybean and corn futures edged higher on Monday, recovering from their lowest in nearly four years as traders waited to see if a major field tour this week will support expectations of bumper U.S. yields.
Wheat eased as ample supply from the Black Sea exporting region continued to weigh on the market and take attention away from poor harvests in France and Germany.
The most-active corn contract Cv1 on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) was up 0.3% at $3.93-3/4 a bushel by 1232 GMT, after hitting its lowest since October 2020 on Friday at $3.90.
CBOT soybeans Sv1 were up 0.4% at $9.60-3/4 a bushel after reaching their weakest since September 2020 on Friday at $9.55.
Front-month September wheat WU24 on CBOT was down 1.3% at $5.23-1/4 a bushel, after earlier touching a two-week low.
Corn and soybeans have been pressured by forecasts for massive U.S. yields, after generally favourable growing weather this year, selling by farmers faced with large stockpiles, and tepid demand from China.
The start of the widely followed Pro Farmer crop tour in the U.S. Midwest encouraged prices to consolidate, analysts said.
"The U.S. crop tour beginning today will provide daily updates on potential corn and soybean yields, which could influence market reactions," commodity data platform CM Navigator said in a note.
Traders were also continuing to monitor Midwest weather as corn and soybeans enter final growth stages, with forecasts showing a dry spell in the week ahead after widespread rains last week.
Concern over weak commodity demand from China, including in agricultural markets where local stockpiles are substantial, remained a drag on sentiment and pushed crude oil prices lower on Monday. O/R
Adverse weather in parts of the world, including for corn in the Black Sea zone and wheat in western Europe and Argentina, was not proving sufficient to support prices, said independent analyst Tobin Gorey.
"Comfortable global crop supply will likely absorb production losses," he said in a note.
