Australian shares rise on mounting U.S. rate-cut bets
Oct 14 (Reuters) -Australian shares rose on Monday, with broad gains in most sectors, after the latest U.S. inflation report fuelled expectations that the Federal Reserve will be cutting interest rates again next month lifting investor sentiment.
The S&P/ASX 200 index .AXJO gained 0.2% to 8,234.3 by 2318 GMT. The benchmark rose 0.8% last week.
Data on Friday showed U.S. producer price index for final demand was unchanged in September, supporting the view that the Fed will be cutting rates again in November.
Earlier last week, high U.S. weekly jobless claims figures also aided to rate-cut expectations from the central bank.
Unlike the United States, which has started easing rates, the Reserve Bank of Australia has lagged other central banks in cutting rates and has kept interest rates steady for almost a year.
Further rate reduction from the Fed will likely add more pressure for the RBA to cut interest rates, which will bode well for the Australian equity market.
In Sydney, financial stocks .AXFJ rose 0.6% with the 'Big Four' banks gaining between 0.3% and 0.6%.
Heavyweight mining stocks .AXMM jumped 0.4%, with Rio Tinto RIO.AX and Fortescue FMG.AX climbing 0.5% and 1.3%, respectively.
Gold stocks .AXGD rose 0.7%, after bullion prices jumped more than 1% on Friday. GOL/
Bucking the trend, energy stocks .AXEJ declined 0.9%, as oil prices fell following disappointing Chinese inflation data over the weekend stoked fears about demand. O/R
Woodside Energy WDS.AX and Santos STO.AX declined 0.8%, each.
TPG Telecom TPG.AX jumped as much as 1.6% to hit a more than 7-month high, after the telecom operator agreed to sell its fibre and fixed network infrastructure assets to telecommunications group Vocus for A$5.25 billion ($3.54 billion).
In New Zealand, the benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index .NZ50 fell 0.4% to 12,794.07.
