Ivory Coast's main cocoa crop developing well despite poor rains
ABIDJAN, July 22 (Reuters) -The next October-to-March main crop is developing well in most of Ivory Coast's main cocoa growing regions, helped by last week's weather, farmers said on Monday.
The world's top cocoa producer is in its rainy season, which runs officially from April to mid-November. Rains are typically abundant during this period but they have been scarce in the last weeks.
Farmers said it was too early to give an accurate forecast for the main crop as the weather in August and September would be a determining factor but they thought there would be no shortage of beans during the first stage from October to December.
A rapid increase in small pods on trees pointed to an abundant harvest, they said.
However, farmers warned that heavy rains in July and August could make pods rot on trees and trigger diseases.
"If we get some light rain and sunshine in August, cocoa will yield better this year than last," said Antoine Bayili, who farms near the western region of Soubre, where 5.4 millimetres (mm) fell last week, 14.2 mm below the five-year average.
Similar comments were made in the southern regions of Agboville and Divo and in the eastern region of Abengourou, where rains were below average. Farmers from these areas said that the cocoa prospect for this season looked good compared with last year.
In the west-central region of Daloa and in the central regions of Bongouanou and Yamoussoukro, where rains were below average last week, farmers said the crop was developing well with plenty of fruits of different sizes on trees.
Farmers said they would have a better outlook for the main crop from late August.
"If the weather is good in August, we'll be selling a lot of cocoa this year during the main crop," said Paul Essie, who farms near Daloa, where 3.3 mm fell last week, 17 mm below the average.
The weekly average temperature across Ivory Coast ranged from 24.3 to 26.9 degrees Celsius.
