CBOT corn ends lower on farmer selling, hefty crop supplies
CHICAGO, Aug 8 (Reuters) -Chicago Board of Trade corn futures fell for a third session on Thursday, as bearish sentiment weighed over the market due to hefty crop supplies, increased farmer selling and sluggish export demand for this fall's U.S. harvest, traders said.
CBOT September corn CU24 settled down 4 cents at $3.79-1/4 per bushel.
Most-active December CZ24 corn ended down 3-3/4 cents at $3.97 per bushel.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported net 2023-24 U.S. corn export sales of 485,400 metric tons for the week ended Aug. 1, compared with 100,000 to 400,000 tons expected by analysts. Sales of 249,100 tons for 2024-25 missed estimates for 475,000 to 1 million tons.
Traders shored up their positions ahead of Monday's global supply-and-demand report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which many traders expect to forecast a massive U.S. harvest this fall even as Chinese demand this summer has cooled.
The oversupply perspective was reinforced early on Thursday, when traders began circulating a month-old USDA research report about flood damage to Midwestern cropland - which sent soybean prices falling as the damaged area appeared small.
Spot cash basis bids for corn mostly fell in the U.S. Midwest on Thursday, continuing a multi-day decline in bids as farmers continued to offload inventory while corn futures lingered near four-year lows.
Global trading house Cargill will undergo structural changes after missing internal earnings goals, with plans to streamline operations into three units instead of five, according to an internal company document seen by Reuters and two company sources.
