New throughout, adds details about Mantle Ridge, position and background

Oct 4 (Reuters) -Mantle Ridge built a position in Air Products and Chemicals APD.N and wants the industrial gas manufacturer to cut costs, focus on its core businesses and pave the path for a new leader, people familiar with the matter said on Friday.

The New York-based hedge fund now owns more than $1 billion worth of stock in the Allentown, Pennsylvania-headquartered company, the people said. At Friday's closing price of $285.50, the stake would represent a stake of nearly 4 million shares.

Air Products' stock price jumped nearly 6% in after hours trading on news the activist investor plans to push for changes. It is roughly flat over the last 52 weeks where the broader S&P 500 stock index climbed nearly 35%.

For Mantle Ridge's chief executive officer Paul Hilal, the investment is a return to a name he worked on more than a decade ago. In 2013 Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Capital Management, where Hilal was a partner, made a $2.2 billion play on the company and the firm was instrumental in appointing CEO Seifi Ghasemi to his position.

But a decade on Ghasemi at age 80 ranks among the oldest CEOs at S&P 500 companies and has indicated he would like to stay on. His contract is renewed yearly for the next four years.

Hilal would like the company, which has a value of $63 billion, to address succession planning as well along with improving the company's strategy and capital allocation. Investors have expressed concerns that Air Products is moving away from its core business more into clean energy.

Air Products did not immediately respond to a request for comment and a spokesman for Mantle Ridge declined to comment.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news on Friday afternoon.

Earlier this year, Air Products sold its liquefied natural gas business to Honeywell International HON.O for $1.81 billion.

Mantle Ridge traditionally focuses on one or two investments at a time and has previously made bets on railroad CSX CSX.O where Hilal installed Hunter Harrison as CEO and on food services company Aramark ARMK.N where John Zillmer became CEO soon after Mantle Ridge invested.
