HOLD YOUR HORSES ON LUXURY SECTOR AFTER CHINA STIMULUS
Europe's luxury sector surged last week on news that China is stimulating its economy, including possible targeted measures for the consumer, but UBS analysts think it's too soon to turn constructive on Chinese luxury demand.
The STOXX Europe Luxury 10 .STXLUXP - which comprises giants including LVMH LVMH.PA, Hermes HRMS.PA and Richemont CFR.S - rose 13% last week, its biggest weekly jump on record, after China announced its most aggressive stimulus measures since the pandemic.
"We remain of the view that this may be not enough to drive a rebound in Chinese luxury demand (~30% of sector sales), given the importance of property prices in generating a wealth effect for the consumer," UBS analysts say in a note, believing it will take longer and cost more to stabilise the property market.
The Swiss bank believes that luxury earnings season, which kicks off when LVMH reports on October 8, could bring a pullback in the sector.
"In our view, it is unlikely to be a positive catalyst," UBS says.
The bank adds that there has been sluggish momentum not only among Chinese consumers but other nationalities as well, "which on our estimates have driven ~80% of sector's growth since 2019, and as such remain key to a potential rebound."
