S&P 500 nears its July record highs, backs off

S&P 500 NEARS ITS JULY RECORD HIGHS, BACKS OFF
Wall Street's main indexes are choppy and little changed early on Wednesday, as investors digest the release of the updated U.S. payrolls data, and await the minutes from the Federal Reserve's July policy meeting.
The U.S. labor department says the preliminary estimate of nonfarm payrolls benchmark revision would cut the March 2024 level of employment by 818,000 or 0.5%.
With this, the S&P 500 index .SPX hit a high of 5,632.68, coming within 1% of its July 16 record closing and intraday highs of 5,667.20, and 5,669.67. However, it has since backed away to around 5,600 after failing to fill its July 17 downside gap.
A majority of S&P 500 sectors are higher with consumer discretionary .SPLRCD, up about 1%, leading the charge. Financials .SPSY are the weakest group, off around 0.5%.
Of note, retail stocks are trading up. The SPDR S&P retail ETF XRT.P is up around 0.8%. This after Target TGT.N, which is rallying more than 10%, raised its profit forecast. Though Macy's M.N is trading off more than 10% after it cut its annual sales forecast.
