EUROPEAN EQUITIES HIGHER, SNB GIVES SWISS STOCKS A BOOST
Most major European equity markets are trading higher on Thursday with attention on central banks in Europe and politics taking a back seat for now.
The Swiss National Bank kicked things off with a quarter-point rate cut, a decision that was not a foregone conclusion by any stretch, with analysts split on what they might do.
The cut has given the SMI .SSMI a lift and helped other European bourses too. The index is last up 0.3% having been little changed before the announcement.
Europe's STOXX 600 .STOXX is up 0.4%, while the DAX .GDAXI and FTSE .FTSE are rising 0.6% and 0.2% respectively.
France's CAC .FCHI is even joining the party, rising 0.5%, as the index continues to cautiously rebound from its biggest weekly drop since February 2022 last week.
Norway's central bank provided few surprises by holding rates at 4.5%, with attention turning to the Bank of England's announcement at 1100 GMT.
In corporate news, Evotec EVTG.DE shares are up over 15% after a media report that the company is speaking to defense advisers following the recent fall in share price.
Most of Europe's major sectors are in the green, although food and beverages .SX3P lag, falling 0.6% as Danone DANO.PA and Tate & Lyle TATE.L drag on the index.
