Asia Distillates-Upbeat buying from Trafigura continues; Sept sales yet to be seen
SINGAPORE, Aug 8 (Reuters) -Asia's middle distillates markets saw a flurry of open window trading activity done in discounts , though sales tenders were only for August cargoes so far and traders were still cautious aboutSeptember demand-supply outlooks.
In this week's open trading window, trading firm Trafigura went on a shopping spree for mostly end-August shipments - buying up to 900,000 barrels. It also bought around 300,000 barrels of early September cargoes.
On the spot tender front, prompt offers were mostly prevalent as some sellers were still clearing stock after some failed sales last week - though September offers from several northeast Asian refiners were yet to emerge.
Recent fluctuations have been minimal since there is no sign of ramp up in demand, a source from a northeast Asia refinery said.
Meanwhile, the slight hesitation by China's oil majors to export cargoes is due to weaker export margins compared with end-July, one China-based trader said.
Refining margins GO10SGCKMc1 declined by around 40 cents a barrel week on week, as a reflection of the volatile paper swaps movements and overall weakness.
Cash differentials GO10-SIN-DIF closed the shortened trading week at a discount of 28 cents a barrel, marginally stronger week on week by 3 cents a barrel thanks to Trafigura's buying interest.
On the jet fuel front, window activity thinned significantly and the market was barren of deals for the week.
Traders were waiting to see if there was more prompt demand coming from regional markets such as Japan given the shortage from refinery outages, but overall demand for summer was less than expected.
Regrade JETREG10SGMc1 however did climb by 14 cents a barrel week on week to close at a discount of 80 cents because of weaker gasoil performance in comparison.
