Abrdn profit beats forecasts, CEO search continues

LONDON, Aug 6 (Reuters) -Abrdn ABDN.L reported better-than-expected profit and lower costs for the first half of the year on Tuesday, helping lift the asset manager' shares 5% in early trading.
The embattled British company provided no update on its leadership amid some speculation interim boss Jason Windsor would be appointed CEO and tasked with the role of restoring confidence in its ailing brand.
Former Aviva AV.L executive Windsor was elevated to interim CEO in May this year, after Stephen Bird abruptly stepped down.
Mid-sized asset managers, such as abrdn, have faced tough trading conditions due to inflationary pressures and falling demand for actively-managed products, which account for the bulk of profit.
Abrdn has been particularly acutely hit, suffering deep outflows of client cash during volatile markets in recent years and since a much-criticised rebranding.
However, the company reassured investors somewhat on Tuesday by posting operating profit of 128 million pounds, beating expectations, and lowering its costs.
Abrdn announced plans in January to axe 500 roles - equivalent to 1 in 10 jobs - and to cut 150 million pounds of costs by 2025, which it recommitted to on Tuesday.
Analysts welcomed abrdn's focus on costs but said concerns remained about ongoing outflows of client cash.
The company saw 1.6 billion pounds of net outflows after inflows into low-fee cash funds were stripped out.
"The outcome is – across most lines of business – a bit better than might have been feared," analysts at Panmure Liberum said in a note.
Analysts have previously said a change in leadership at abrdn could re-ignite calls for a break-up of the company - which spans traditional fund management through to interactive investor, a retail investing platform.
Windsor has a background in dealmaking himself, having spent 15 years at investment bank Morgan Stanley.
Windsor told a media call on Tuesday that strategic repositioning of the group was "not high on our priority list". "It's really all about execution," he added.
Abrdn also reported total assets of 505.9 billion pounds ($646 billion) in the six months to end-June, broadly in line with forecasts, and announced an unchanged interim dividend of 7.3 pence per share.
