UBS SAYS PRESIDENT BIDEN NOW HAS 10% CHANCE OF WINNING AND SWEEPING CONGRESS

The chances of President Biden winning the next presidential election with Democrats sweeping Congress is now 10% following his "flawed" debate performance, according to UBS fixed income strategist Thomas McLoughlin.

President Biden's debate performance against Republican challenger former President Donald Trump has caused consternation among Democratic leaders and donors, who have become increasingly vocal about their skepticism over the president's ability to withstand the rigors of another term, McLoughlin said.

Although President Biden has rejected pleas to step aside and his reiterated his plan to continue the contest, he now trails Trump by 5-6 percentage points among likely voters, according to a recent New York Times/Siena College survey.

UBS estimates that the probability of Biden winning with a divided Congress consisting of a Republican Senate and Democratic House is 30%. The chances that Trump would win in a red sweep of both houses of Congress is 45%, while probability of a Trump win with a divided congress of a Republican Senate and Democratic House is 15%.

"Until the president makes a final decision whether to withdraw, we are reluctant to draw too many conclusions with regard to hypothetical matchups between Trump and other contenders, including Vice President Harris," McLoughlin said.
