POLITICS
A court in Palermo is expected to deliver a verdict on Friday in a kidnapping trial involving Italy's deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini, who risks a six-year prison term for holding a boat full of migrants offshore for almost three weeks in 2019.
ECONOMY
ISTAT releases December consumer and business confidence data (0900 GMT); October industry sales data (1000 GMT); November producer prices data (1100 GMT).

(*) In an opinion piece published in the Financial Times on Friday AD Andrea Orcel said his bank's investment in German rival Commerzbank and its bid for smaller domestic peer Banco BPM BAMI.MI will test the euro zone's commitment towards greater integration, which is necessary to avoid an economic decline.
Germany will not subject any potential takeover of Commerzbank CBKG.DE by UniCredit to an investment screening, a German government source said on Thursday. The source said that was regardless of whether the German lender were considered so-called critical infrastructure or not.
BANCO BPM BAMI.MI
The bank struck a deal with trade unions on 550 new hirings in exchange for 1,110 voluntary early retirements, the FABI banking sector union said on Thursday.
IVECO IVG.MI
The defence and civil protection unit IDV has signed a contract with the Italian Army worth 755 million euros for the supply of 1,453 tactical-logistic trucks, the company said on Thursday.
RAI WAY RWAY.MI, MFE MFEB.MI
The main shareholders in Italian broadcasting tower companies Rai Way and EI Towers signed a preliminary agreement to kick off talks on a potential merger, with an exclusivity period until Sept. 30, 2025, they said on Thursday. MFE-MediaforEurope MFEB.MI, the TV group controlled by Italy's Berlusconi family, holds a 40% stake in EI Towers.

Italian utility said on Thursday it reached an agreement to sell part of its gas distribution network in northern Italy to smaller rival Ascopiave.

Italy's market watchdog Consob approved the banking group's offer document related to the bid for Intermonte INTM.MI, setting an offer period between Dec 23, 2024 and Jan 24, 2025.
