AFTER STRONG RALLY, DOLLAR DUE FOR A PULLBACK

The U.S. dollar may be due for a pullback after staging a strong bull run this month as investors price in a greater chance of a soft U.S. economic landing and rising odds that Donald Trump will win this year's presidential election in November.

But any decline may be minor, said Shaun Osborne, chief foreign exchange strategist at Scotiabank. "The USD is looking generally over extended and prone to a minor correction at least on the charts but that does not necessarily mean a deep or sustained drop."

The dollar index .DXY has risen to 103.12, from a low of 100.18 on Sept. 30.

Dollar strength is supported by "the rebound in market-driven US yields amid a resilient economy and the tightening US presidential election race may also have revived pro-dollar 'Trump trades' (pro-growth, pro-inflation, tariffs etc.) that were a feature of the markets through mid-year," Osborne said.

A Trump administration is seen as likely to maintain and possibly introduce new tax cuts, loosen business regulations and enact new tariffs, which analysts say could boost growth and inflation.

Betting site Polymarket saw Trump overtake Kamala Harris as the likely victor at this year’s presidential election earlier this month and Trump is now seen as having 57% odds of winning, compared to 43% for Harris.

The greenback was also boosted after a much stronger-than-expected jobs report for September increased optimism that the U.S. economy is still in strong shape.
