July 30 (Reuters) -Electric utility firm Vistra VST.N said on Tuesday that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved its request to extend the operating license of its Comanche Peak nuclear plant in Texas by another two decades.

Vistra had applied for the license extension for the two-unit nuclear facility in October 2022.

The company said that units 1 and 2 of the plant can operate now through 2050 and 2053, respectively.

There is growing global support for nuclear energy, which is seen as a carbon-free solution to address pollution and climate change.

According to an earlier estimate from the company, the nuclear plant has the capacity of 2,400 megawatt, which is enough to power about 1.2 million homes in Texas in normal conditions.
