NEW YORK, July 17 (Reuters) -Cash differentials for diesel surged in Chicago for a second straight session on Wednesday as outages at Exxon's Joliet, Illinois refinery sent market participants scrambling to secure supplies, traders said.

Most units at the 251,800-barrel-per-day refinery will be down all week with plans to restart this weekend, industry watcher IIR Energy said.

The refinery had a power outage late on Monday amid heavy rainfall and tornadoes in the area, according to an earlier filing. Exxon did not respond to requests for comment.

Chicago diesel ULSD-DIFF-MC gained 12.5 cents to trade 2.5 cents per gallon below the ultra-low sulfur diesel futures benchmark HOc1 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, market participants said. The product gained six cents in the prior session.

Chicago CBOB gasoline rose 3.5 cents to 14.25 cents per gallon below the RBOB gasoline futures contract RBc1, the market participants added. It gained 10.25 cents in Tuesday's trade.

Prices also rose elsewhere in the Midwest. In the group 3 market, which covers pipeline deliveries from Tulsa to Minnesota, V-grade gasoline RUV-DIFF-G3 rose two cents to 15.75 cents under futures, traders said.

Group 3 diesel ULSD-DIFF-G3 gained five cents to 10.25 cents below the benchmark.

In the U.S. Gulf Coast, M2 conventional gasoline RU-DIFF-USG gained 1.5 cents to 12 cents below futures, traders said. A2 CBOB gasoline CBOB-DIFF-USG rose half a cent to 21.25 cents per gallon below futures, they said.

Gulf Coast 62-grade ULSD ULSD-DIFF-USG fell half a cent to trade 7.75 cents per gallon below futures.

Diesel for delivery in New York Harbor ULSD-DIFF-NYH fell half a cent to 2.25 cents per gallon below futures, traders said.

RBOB gasoline futures rose 2.38 cents to $2.5013 a gallon, while ULSD futures rose 2.52 cents to $2.494 a gallon. Crude oil prices rose by a larger margin, after government data showed U.S. crude inventories fell but fuel stockpiles rose last week, weighing on refinery margins.

U.S. crude futures CLc1 rose by 5.57 cents a gallon. As a result, ULSD futures' premium against WTI futures was the smallest since Dec 2021. RBOB's premium was the lowest since June.

U.S. gasoline stocks USOILG=ECI rose by 3.3 million barrels last week to 232.99 million barrels, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said. That compared with analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll for a 1.6 million-barrel drop.

Distillate stockpiles USOILD=ECI, which include diesel and heating oil, rose by 3.5 million barrels in the week ended July 12 to 128.07 million barrels, versus expectations for an 833,000-barrel drop, EIA said.

Refinery crude runs USOICR=ECI fell by 181,000 barrels in the last week, EIA data showed. Refinery utilization rates USOIRU=ECI fell by 1.7 percentage points.

Renewable fuel (D6) credits RIN-D6-US for 2024 traded between 65 cents and 63 cents, compared to 65 cents each in the prior session. Biomass-based (D4) credits RIN-D4-US for 2024 also traded between 65 cents and 63 cents each, versus 65 cents each on Tuesday, traders said.
