US Cash Grains-Basis weak at river elevators, soy crushers, ethanol plants

CHICAGO, Aug 21 (Reuters) -Spot basis bids for soybeans delivered to processing plants and barge-loading river elevators were steady to lower on Wednesday on adequate supplies and higher futures prices, grain merchants said.

* Processing plants have good supplies on hand following recent farmer sales. Expectations for a massive U.S. harvest have also limited demand with prices likely to decline over the coming weeks.

* Crushers in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Decatur, Illinois, slashed their spot basis bids by 10 cents a bushel on Wednesday.

* Spot corn basis bids were mostly lower at river elevators and ethanol plants and steady to firm at other processors.

* Some corn processors were offering premiums for grain arriving in the next few weeks ahead of the harvest. Autumn bids, meanwhile, remain under pressure from forecasts for a bumper U.S. crop.

* A corn processor in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, raised its spot basis bid by 2 cents a bushel on Wednesday. The bid for grain arriving by the end of this month was at a 30-cent premium to bids for grain arriving in early September.

* In Blair, Nebraska, a corn processor also lifted its spot bid by 2 cents, with bids for grain arriving before Sept. 6 at a 5-cent premium to full-September deliveries.

* Market participants are monitoring this week's annual Pro Farmer crop tour to confirm large U.S. corn and soy yield potential that is bearish for prices. Scouts estimated above-average corn yields and soybean pod counts in Nebraska and Indiana on Tuesday, and are surveying top producing states Illinois and Iowa on Wednesday.
