WALL ST ENDS HIGHER WITH FED AND EARNINGS IN FOCUS

The S&P 500 .SPX and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC closed higher after falling for the last two sessions, while the Dow .DJI clocked its second straight daily gain.

As they digested earnings reports and waited for more earnings and economic data, investors appeared reassured by the Federal Reserve's signal on Wednesday that while it may have to keep rates higher for longer, its to-do list does not currently include a rate hike.

Of course the Fed has long insisted that policy decisions will depend on how the economic data looks, so investors will carefully monitor the April payrolls report due out on Friday morning before the market open.

For April, economists polled by Reuters are expecting non-farm payroll additions of 243,000 compared with 303,000 in March.

Investors are also monitoring earnings season with Apple Inc's AAPL.O report due out after Thursday's close.

Of the S&P 500's 11 major industry indexes, nine advanced on Thursday with information technology .SPLRCT, finishing up 1.64% and leading the gainers while materials .SPLRCM was the biggest decliner, falling 0.5%. The second-biggest gainer was consumer discretionary .SPLRCD, which added 1.58%, while the second-biggest loser was healthcare .SPXHC, which fell 0.1%.
