USD bears hope Fed starts thinking about 50 bps cut

Aug 1 (Reuters) -Dollar bears hope the possibility of a jumbo half-point interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve next month gains traction, as this could negatively impact the greenback.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell said at a press conference on Wednesday that a first rate cut of 50 basis points is "not something we are thinking about right now", after he put a September rate cut on the table.

Worse than expected US data might get the Fed thinking about whether it should start its rate-cutting cycle with an aggressive 50 bps reduction - with scope for that ball to start rolling if the U.S. unemployment rate comes in higher than the 4.1% consensus forecast in July's jobs report due on Friday.

Markets currently see a 13% chance of the Fed cutting rates by 50 bps on Sept. 18, with a 25 bps cut fully priced. FEDWATCH
