U.S. STOCKS SINK AFTER FED SIGNALS SLOWER PACE OF CUTS

The three major U.S. stock indexes closed sharply lower on Wednesday, with the Dow .DJI and S&P 500 .SPX registering their biggest daily percentage declines since early August and the Nasdaq .IXIC posting its biggest drop since late July after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates as expected, but signaled it will ease the pace of further cuts in the coming year.

The Dow ended lower for a 10th straight session, its longest losing streak since 1974.

The Fed cut rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday, and U.S. central bankers issued fresh projections calling for two quarter-point interest-rate cuts next year amid rising inflation, a forecast consistent with a wait-and-see approach.

Regional banks .KRX, chips .SOX, and small caps .RUT were among areas hit the hardest in the wake of the Fed announcement and Fed Chair Jerome Powell's comments.

The SOX ended down 3.9%, while the RUT finished off 4.4%.

All of the major S&P 500 sectors closed lower, with consumer discretionary .SPLRCD - down 4.7% - and real estate .SPLRCR - down 4% - falling the most.
