U.S. Q3 EARNINGS GROWTH FORECAST WEAKENS FROM A WEEK AGO
Analysts are estimating a 4.0% year-over-year earnings gain for S&P 500 .SPX companies in the third quarter, down from the Oct. 11 estimate for 4.9% growth, the latest LSEG data shows.
Roughly 83% of earnings reports are beating analysts' expectations so far, with results in from 71 of the S&P 500.
But the overall forecast is down largely because of Boeing's BA.N recent negative pre-announcement on third-quarter results and a one-time item charge that impacted the consensus estimate for Eli Lilly LLY.N, Tajinder Dhillon, senior research analyst at LSEG Data & Analytics, said on Friday.
Mostly stronger-than-expected results from big U.S. banks helped to lift third-quarter estimated earnings growth for financials to 6.7% from 2.1% at the start of the month.
The earnings season unofficially kicked off late last week.
