US Cash Grains-Corn, soybean basis bids steady-stronger as harvest wanes
CHICAGO, Oct 28 (Reuters) -Basis bids for corn were steady to stronger in the U.S. Midwest on Monday, reflecting demand from processors and river elevators as the autumn harvest neared its end stages, slowing the movement of grain into marketing channels.
* The corn basis firmed by 3 to 5 cents a bushel at grain processing plants in Decatur, Illinois and Chicago.
* The corn basis also improved by 3 to 5 cents at elevators in Davenport, Iowa, where grain is loaded onto barges for shipment on the Mississippi River toward Gulf export terminals, and at Morris, Illinois, along the Illinois River.
* Soybean basis bids were mostly flat, although the basis strengthened by 2 cents at Morris, Illinois.
* The basis held steady at soybean crushing facilities, spot checks showed, after firming at multiple locations last week.
* The fall harvest is winding down after weeks of mostly dry weather that kept combines rolling, with few days off. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said late Monday the soybean harvest was 89% complete and the corn harvest was 81% complete, both ahead of the respective five-year averages of 78% for soybeans and 64% for corn.
* On the Chicago Board of Trade, December corn futures CZ24 settled down 4-1/2 cents at $4.10-3/4 a bushel, while November soybeans SX24 ended down 13-3/4 cents at $9.74 a bushel. GRA/
