CHICAGO, July 29 (Reuters) -Spot basis bids for U.S. soybeans and corn were mostly steady to weaker at grain elevators and river terminals on Monday afternoon.

* Farmers hedged some corn as prices rebounded from early losses, John Stewart & Associates said. Basis has a weaker general tone, especially in the west, the firm added.

* Corn elevators near Chicago lowered their corn basis bid by 10 cents per bushel. An elevator in Council Bluffs, Iowa, reduced the corn basis by 2 cents and the soy basis by 7 cents.

* The U.S. Department of Agriculture rated 68% of the U.S. corn crop as good-excellent in a weekly report, up one percentage point from a week earlier. Analysts on average expected USDA to cut its rating to 66%.

* USDA rated the soybean crop as 67% good-excellent, compared to 68% a week ago and in line with analysts' estimates.
