UPBEAT GDP REVISION REMEDIES NVIDIA HANGOVER

Wall Street advanced early Thursday, as investors found some relief for their Nvidia morning-after in the form of sunny economic data.

Three major U.S. stock indexes started the session with modest gains, which saw consumer discretionary .SPLRCD and the FANG+ group of megacap momentum stocks .NYFANG outperforming the broader market.

Chipmaker and AI darling Nvidia NVDA.O beat Street estimates but its forward guidance failed to clear lofty estimates, leading to some hand-wringing over whether the artificially intelligent sky is falling.

NVDA's share price was last off 2.8%, but the broader chip sector .SOX was most recently up 0.9%.

Of the stocks that form the "Magnificent 7," only Nvidia was red.

On the economic front, the Commerce Department's upward revision to second quarter GDP, which included solid consumer spending data and cooler inflation readings, helped put a spring back in market participants' step.

Other data was mixed; a slow but steady softening in labor market conditions was evidenced by an increase in continuing jobless claims, while an advance take on international trade showed the goods trade gap widening.

Unofficially, today marks the penultimate trading day of summer, a time of year typically marked by light volume and heightened volatility risk.
