THE DOW MANAGES A GAIN WHILE NASDAQ, S&P 500 DIP

The Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI, rising just 0.2%, was the only advancer among Wall Street's main indexes at the end of Thursday's choppy session, while the Nasdaq composite .IXIC closed down 0.9%, and the S&P was off by 0.5%.

Small-cap indexes outperformed with the Russell 2000 .RUT advancing 1.3%, and the S&P 600 .SPCY adding 1.4%.

With second-quarter GDP data coming in stronger than expected, Morningstar Wealth's Philip Straehl noted that small caps are more sensitive to the economic cycle, while investors are also trying to broaden their view past megacap favorites.

Federal Reserve policymakers are seen leaving their short-term interest-rate target in the 5.25%-5.50% range after their meeting next week, and waiting until September to start rate cuts after data showing the U.S. economy regained steam last quarter.

IBM IBM.N was the Dow's biggest gainer, closing up 4.3%, after the tech giant beat analysts' second-quarter revenue estimates and raised its annual growth forecast for its software business, late on Wednesday as it benefits from a spending boost linked to artificial intelligence (AI).

The blue chip average was also helped by a 2.4% gain in Boeing BA.N, which finalized a guilty plea to a criminal fraud conspiracy charge and agreed to pay at least $243.6 million after breaching a 2021 U.S. Justice Department agreement, according to a filing. However, relatives of 15 of 346 people killed in two crashes of Boeing 737 MAX planes urged the judge to reject the plea deal.

Among the S&P's 11 major industry sectors, just 4 managed a gain on Thursday. Energy .SPNY, up 1.5% was the biggest gainer followed by Industrials .SPLRCI, up 0.8%, while the biggest decliner was communication services .SPLRCL, down 1.9%, and tech .SPLRCT, down 1.1%.

S&P 500 value .IVX rose 0.2%, outperforming growth .IGX, which fell 1%.
