BOGOTA, Sept 27 (Reuters) -Spanish renewable energy company Zelestra on Friday opened its first solar park in Colombia, worth $200 million and expected to generate 144 megawatts of electricity, as part of its expansion in Latin America.

The solar park is located close to Monteria, capital of Colombia's Cordoba province.

Colombia's government is trying to shift the country to renewable energy and away from its dependence on fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil.

"This is a fundamental milestone for Zelestra, we have a quite ambitious plan for the region, for many years we have had a presence in Chile and Peru and we were missing Colombia, a country in which we want to grow in the coming years," Jose Luis Garcia, the company's president in Latin America, said in a statement.

Zelestra will soon open a second solar farm in Cesar province, which is expected to generate 108 megawatts of energy.

Colombia's electricity matrix is one of the world's most renewable, according to industry group Acolgen, which says more than two thirds of the country's power comes from hydroelectric dams, solar and wind.

Zelestra eyes developing a portfolio of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) in Colombia, 1GW in Peru and 3GW in Chile, to become a major renewable energy producer in Latin America.
