S&P 500 DIPS AS ALPHABET DROPS; NVIDIA FLAT AFTER RESULTS, FORECAST

The S&P 500 .SPX is edging lower in early trading Thursday, with shares of Nvidia NVDA.O little changed following its quarterly results and forecast but shares of Alphabet GOOGL.O falling after the Department of Justice said Alphabet's Google must divest Chrome.

Alphabet is down about 4%. The department said Google must sell its Chrome browser, share data and search results with rivals in order to end its monopoly on online search.

AI chipmaker Nvidia, which was the most anticipated earnings story of the week (and arguably the entire earnings season), delivered after the bell on Wednesday Street-beating results but its forecast, constrained by supply snags, fell short of expectations. Nvidia shares are down 0.03%.

Investors also are digesting a weekly report that showed jobless claims stood at 213,000, compared with expectations of 220,000.
