S&P 500 CLIMBS AS INFLATION DATA SUPPORTS RATE CUT BETS

The S&P 500 .SPX ended higher on Wednesday, with Nvidia rising and Alphabet dipping after fresh inflation data supported expectations the Federal Reserve will begin cutting interest rates in September.

Heavyweight AI chipmaker Nvidia NVDA.O rose 1.6%, and it was the most traded company on Wall Street, with $39 billion worth of shares exchanged, according to LSEG data.

Google-parent Alphabet GOOGL.O dipped about 2.3% after a report that the U.S. Department of Justice is considering options that include breaking up the online search engine.

U.S. consumer prices rose moderately in July, and the annual increase in inflation slowed to below 3% for the first time since early 2021.

With investors concerned about a potential economic slowdown, money market traders are split over whether the Fed will cut 25 basis points or 50 basis points at its September meeting, according to the CME's FedWatch Tool.

Of the 11 S&P 500 .SPX sector indexes, seven rose, led by financials .SPSY, up 1.3%, while communication services .SPLRCL dipped 0.9%.

The S&P 500 is now up 14% in 2024, and the Nasdaq .IXIC has gained 15%.

Here is the final snapshot for U.S. markets.
