July 16 (Reuters) -Factbox on Gareth Southgate, who left his role as the manager of England on Tuesday, days after defeat in the European Championship final to Spain.
CLUB CAREER
* Born on Sept. 3, 1970, in Watford, Southgate played as a defender and midfielder.
* Played for Southampton youth before moving to Crystal Palace in 1988, with his debut coming as a substitute against Southend United in the League Cup two years later.
* Named as the Palace captain at the age of 23, he led them to the First Division title in the 1993-94 season and went on to make 117 appearances for the London-based club.
* Joined Aston Villa in 1995, where he won the League Cup in the 1995-96 campaign.
* Switched to Middlesbrough in 2001 and was the first signing under Steve McClaren.
* Also captained Middlesbrough, winning the League Cup in the 2003-04 season and finishing as the UEFA Cup runner-up in 2005-06.
* Finished his career at Middlesbrough, having made 204 appearances for them.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
* Capped 57 times for England between 1995-2004. During that period, he missed a penalty in the Euro 1996 semi-final against Germany, which sent hosts England out of the competition.
MANAGERIAL CAREER
* Named as Middlesbrough manager in 2006 but was sacked in 2009.
* He was appointed as England manager in September 2016 after stints with the England under-21s from 2013–2016.
* Guided England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 28 years.
* Followed up that success by reaching the final of Euro 2020, but lost to Italy on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
* England went on to suffer a quarter-final exit at the 2022 World Cup after losing to eventual runners-up France.
* Despite underwhelming performances in the Euro 2024 group stage, England reached the final but suffered a 2-1 defeat by Spain.
* The 53-year-old left his role as England manager after 102 games.
