BUCHAREST, Sept 4 (Reuters) -Romania could connect 1,373 MW worth of new electricity production to the national grid by year end, most of it from newsolar parks, Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja said on Wednesday.

The European Union state is seeking to lower its carbon emissions to meet the bloc's emissions reduction goals and also to shore up security of supply, which has become a more urgent issue since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The country uses a mix of gas, coal, hydro, nuclear and renewables for electricity generation and has committed to phasing out lignite - or brown coal – under its EU funded recovery aid package, although the energy ministry is currently seeking an extension.

"By year-end we expect to be able to connect other capacities worth a total of 1,373 MW," Burduja told reporters after an energy sector meeting about winter readiness. "This means EU funds and other investments are showing results."

The new generation includes retrofittinga lignite-fired power plant in Rovinari worth 330 MW as well as a new gas power plant in Midia worth up to 70 MW. A long-delayed 430 MW Iernut gas-fired power plant would not be fully completed this year as initially expected, he added.

"We're seeing spectacular developments in the area of solar parks, by year-end we could have another new 683 MW installed, adding to the 228 MW already connected this year, we are talking about almost 1,000 MW worth of new solar this year," he said.

He added power storage capacity could reach 110 MW by year-end.
