SAO PAULO, Nov 19 (Reuters) -Agricultural firm Louis Dreyfus unveiled on Tuesday a new sugar transshipment terminal in Brazil's Sao Paulo state, whose construction is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
According to executives from the firm, the new terminal in the city of Pederneiras will increase the company's railway transshipment capacity by 1 million metric tons per year.
Sugar plants in Sao Paulo state almost exclusively use roads to ship their production to the nearby port of Santos, which increases freight costs.
The new transshipment terminal is expected to make Louis Dreyfus' sugar trade business more competitive and will likely drive an increase in volumes coming from Brazil's sugar belt, the company said.
"That's why we are investing in export logistics flow, both at the port (level) and in transshipment," said Louis Dreyfus North Latam director Guilherme Correia.
Brazil, the world's largest producer and exporter of sugar, accounts for around 70% of global exports of the commodity.
The agricultural firm, which also trades in other commodities in Brazil, already operates a terminal in Pederneiras for grains received from a waterway.
