HEDGE FUNDS BEAT BENCHMARK IN JULY: PIVOTALPATH

Hedge funds continued to outperform the S&P 500 .SPX in July, according to data from research firm PivotalPath, with equity exposure to financials remaining a strong source of returns for funds looking to diversify away from megacap technology stocks.

The PivotalPath Composite Index, which tracks a variety of hedge fund investment strategies, rose 0.8% in July and generated 5.8% alpha, or outperformance, relative to the S&P 500 since the start of 2024.

The PivotalPath Equity Sector: Financials Index led all indices in July, returning 9.6%, while an index tracking technology, media and telecom stocks ended the month up only 0.8%.

"Financials are often generous dividend payers versus tech and others, and have benefited from the ongoing rotation away from Artificial Intelligence as investors look or more traditional drivers of growth," PivotalPath analysts said.

July continued a solid month for hedge fund performance in general, according to PivotalPath, with all the strategies it tracks outperforming the benchmark stock index.

Credit, multi-strategy and global macro strategies have produced the highest alpha for the 12-month period through the end of July, PivotalPath said.

On the other hand, an index tracking global macro commodities was the biggest decliner in July, down 2.1% "as many managers missed out on the bearish twist in commodities."

Hedge funds added to bearish bets in Japanese stocks at the fastest pace in over five years between August 2 - August 8, according to Goldman Sachs data earlier this week. Considering the Nikkei's .N225 near 9% rebound this week, it will be interesting to see how those bets play out.
