Czechs completing $166 mln deal for 14 Leopard tanks from Rheinmetall
PRAGUE, Nov 20 (Reuters) -The Czech Republic will buy 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany's Rheinmetall RHMG.DE for 3.98 billion crowns ($165.54 million)as it expands its arsenal of the battle vehicles, its defence ministry said on Wednesday.
The Czech Republic has been a strong backer of Ukraine in its defence against Russia's invasion, and has provided military equipment to Kyiv, receiving in exchange 30 older Leopards from Germany.
The ministry said the purchase from Rheimetall will expand its fleet to 42 Leopard 2A4 tanks and two related Buffalo 3 armoured recovery vehicles.
It said it would finalise the Rheinmetall contract by the end of the year, and deliveries would be completed by the end of 2026.
In June, the government approved a plan to join Germany in jointly purchasing up to 77 new Leopard 2A8 tanks, the most modern version, another step in building up a heavy brigade in the coming years.
Prague has been modernising its armed forces with new equipment, including purchases of helicopters, radars, and ordering tracked fighting vehicles and F-35 jets, as it lifts spending on defence in the wake of the war in Ukraine.
