Cricket-England remove NZ openers in first session in Christchurch
Updates at lunch
Nov 28 (Reuters) -England's seamers struck twice in the opening session to remove New Zealand's openers and reduce the hosts to 104 for two at lunch on the opening day of the first test in Christchurch on Thursday.
Skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to send his bowlers out at Hagley Oval and got an almost immediate return when Gus Atkinson sent back Devon Conway, caught and bowled for two.
Tom Latham steadied the ship but Brydon Carse found some movement to induce an outside edge that was snaffled up behind the stumps by stand-in wicketkeeper Ollie Pope when the New Zealand skipper had scored 47 off 54 deliveries.
Kane Williamson, recalled after a groin strain ruled him out of the recent series triumph in India, looked in no such hurry as he accumulated 26 runs off 57 balls alongside Rachin Ravindra, who was 21 not out at the break.
The visiting bowlers will be looking to quickly break up the partnership, already worth 42 runs, when play resumes for the second session on a warm and sunny day in the south island of New Zealand.
England batter Jacob Bethell and New Zealand's seam-bowling all-rounder Nathan Smith both received their first test caps before the start of play.
