CANADA Canadian dollar strengthens, benchmark yield climbs

The Canadian dollar strengthened against the greenback on Monday, and the yield on benchmark government debt climbed.

The loonie CAD= was trading 0.5% higher at C$1.4018 to the greenback, or 71.34 U.S. cents, after trading in a range of 1.4005 to 1.4102.

Canadian government 10-year bond yields CA10YT=RR rose 0.5 basis points to 3.277%. The yield on similar U.S. government benchmark debt fell to 4.4138%.

U.S. December crude CLc1 futures rose $2.14 to settle at $69.16 a barrel on Monday.

Canadian housing starts in October rose more than expected to 240,800 units from a revised 223,400 units the previous month, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said.

A survey of 11 economists polled by Reuters had forecast October housing starts rising to 240,000 units.
