Britain's Drax says new gas plants' start delayed due to slow grid connection
LONDON, Nov 11 (Reuters) -British power generator Drax said the start of three new gas-fired power to early next year because of delays in getting the projects connected to the power grid, it said on Monday.
The projects are expected to provide back-up power when not enough renewable electricity, from wind or solar projects available.
"Commissioning of Drax’s three (gas) developments is due to begin in early 2025 and they’re expected to be fully operational later in the year. This is later than originally planned, primarily due to delays in being provided with a grid connection by the relevant authorities," a Drax spokesperson said in an email.
It had been expected that the projects would begin operation by the end of 2024.
British energy regulator Ofgem last week proposed regulations to cut down a backlog in new projects seeking grid connection, which the system operator said would be vital for the country to meet its clean power goals.
The three plants are expected to have a combined capacity of around 1 gigawatts (GW) and are located in South Wales, and Suffolk and Bedfordshire in England and are expected to only run for short periods of time when needed.
