CANBERRA, Oct 1 (Reuters) -Australia should harvest around 4.4 million bales - or one million metric tons - of cotton in the 2024/25 season, industry group Cotton Australia said on Tuesday, roughly in line with last season's production.

"This year we are expecting about 400,000 green hectares to be planted," said Michael Murray, general manager, Cotton Australia.

"Our growers remain positive on this season's crop with good conditions including soil profiles, moisture content and water allocations and for most the current price still reflects a profitable outcome with all its flow-on benefits," he said.

Cotton is typically planted in October in the main growing areas of New South Wales and Queensland and picked from around March.

Last season, farmers planted close to 480,000 green hectares (1186105.83 acres), Cotton Australia has said.

Australia produced 1.1 million tons of cotton in the 2023/24 season, according to the Australian agriculture ministry, which predicts production in 2024/25 of just over 1 million tons.

The vast majority of Australian cotton is exported.
